The Vineyard

Great wine begins in the vineyard.

The 2016 Curly St. James began its life on the steep, rocky volcanic hillsides of the Mayacamas Mountains. Overlooking the Napa Valley, the vines were grown several thousand feet above sea level from 40+ year old, sustainably farmed vines. Dry-farmed and never watered, the roots of the vines were forced to dig deep and penetrate different soil layers, ensuring added complexity and unique flavors. The low-yielding vineyards produced fruit of exceptional quality. The cool mountain temperatures impart a naturally zesty acidity that ensures balance and longevity.

The Wine

An elegant co-fermentation of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 50% Cabernet Franc.

Curly St. James was designed to age. Proudly old-school in style, it’s a tribute to the wines from the late 60’s, 70’s and 80’s that put Napa Valley on the map. This era produced wines that were refined, graceful and balanced. Curly St. James was created in their image.

The grapes were hand-picked in early September 2016, long before Napa Valley’s average winery even considered their own harvest. The two varietals were co-fermented in equal parts and the immediate synergy of these two varietals was unmistakable. Aged in 100% light toast, new French oak for 24 months and bottle-aged for an additional 5 years until the wine was ready to enjoy.

After aging for 7 years, Curly St. James continues to retain its youthful charm. The aroma bursts with gorgeous nuances of red cherry, pomegranate, and cranberry that is balanced with earthy, tobacco undertones. On the palate, a wonderful trio of penetrating depth of fruit, seductive richness, and wonderful texture which is met with alluring acidity, length and finesse. This wine has a distinct personality that ensures absolute enjoyment.

The wine is only beginning to enter its prime and will continue to age beautifully for 35+ years.
